The Day Technology Stopped Working

It was a normal morning, and I was looking at my phone while I was having breakfast. Out of the blue, the screen went black. At first, I thought that the battery had died, but then I realized that something was wrong. The TV wasn’t working and the WiFi had stopped.

While I was walking to school, I noticed that everyone looked worried. In a blink of an eye, everything had changed. People were trying to use their phones, but nothing worked. Cars were stopping in the middle of the street because the traffic lights weren’t working. Some drivers were shouting and others didn’t know what to do. Everything was total chaos. Suddenly, something stranger happened. While I was sitting on my desk a bright light appeared in my room. In a blink of an eye, everything started turning around and I felt like I was disappearing. When I opened my eyes, I wasn’t in my house anymore. I was in the future. The city looked different, there were no phones. People were living in a calm way, but they didn’t look happy. A mysterious machine in front of me started shining. I understood that I had to fix what had gone wrong.

While I was walking through the empty streets I found a control center that looked abandoned. Inside there was an old system that controlled all the technologies from the past. It had crashed, and nobody in the future knew how to repair it. I knew I was the only one who could fix it. Carefully, I pressed some buttons and restarted the system. For a moment, nothing happened, but then, out of the blue everything started working again. Lights turned on and people began to smile. Everything was normal again but I knew something had changed. That day taught me that technology was important but we must control it and not depend on it.

The day technology stopped working

Sara woke up to a quiet morning. She felt very relaxed but restless somehow, all you could hear were the birds singing and the faint wind. She took a look outside for a while, then, she realized something: there were no cars at all. She took her phone and attempted to turn it on, but it didn’t work. She was tapping the screen nonstop but there were still no results.

A wave hit her, not just a normal realisation wave but with a mix of trouble. She was anxious and somehow frightened and with the quiet neighborhood, it wasn’t helping her.

She saw a little group of people gather, they were having the same problem, she quickly put on her shoes and stepped out of her apartment. The chilly wind made her skin crawl , she saw her neighbours who have been neighbours for neighbours but have never spoken to each other for the first time. Sarah walked towards them in confusion.

  • Are you guys having the same problem?
  • Yeah, nothing is working. I don’t know what’s going on.

Nobody had answers. She looked up at the traffic lights, they also weren’t working. People were panicking about work, teenagers were angry and Sarah was unknowingly putting pieces together and she finally came to a conclusion.

Technology stopped working without warning. The state was caught off guard, they didn’t even know and now, they couldn’t communicate with the citizens because everything required technology.

People tried to find a way to get to their destination with maps but failed miserably because they had no idea on how to use a map. People helped the lost ones and directed them. Sarah thought that nice people didn’t exist because of social media, but this changed her perspective.

As the evening fell , it got darker. It was scary because there was absolutely no light at all, no solar light nor electrical light. Before she knew it, the darkness was present. It was pitch black, she got anxious because she wasn’t used to such darkness, her heart was beating out of her chest. All of a sudden, she heard people singing, their voices were angelic, she felt very relieved. She looked up to the sky and stared at the beautiful  shining stars, it has never shone like that. It was majestic, the stars shone before her eyes. She couldn’t take her eyes off of them, she never had a chance to admire the beautiful creation, the street lamps were always overshadowing the stars, and the stars finally got their moment.

Technology has blinded us, we have always relied on it that we now believe that we cannot do anything without it. But when you gather with people they are always answers, Sarah realized that there is still hope in humanity

The day technology stopped working

I knew that this was a terrible misunderstanding, but I also knew that I was not going to be able to prove my innocence. My identical twin brother looked at me through the window with an evil smile while I was on my way to jail in a police car.

In court, I decided to plead guilty, since it was quite difficult for me to explain what had really happened. All my hopes were crushed into pieces when the two words «death penalty” came out of the judge’s mouth.

For many people, this story began the day that technology stopped working, but for me and my sinister family everything started the day my brother killed the neighbour’s dog. He had meticulously planned that brutal murder, then our parents realized that he was different. Maybe «different» wouldn’t be the term that I would use to define him, I would rather say that he is a psychopath and this is why my parents decided to trap him in the basement using a complex mechanical security system until everyone forgot about his existence.

For years, he accumulated hate while waiting for sweet revenge that could satisfy him and that moment came the day that technology stopped working.

We were celebrating my father’s birthday by throwing a big party when suddenly all the lights and electronic devices turned off. My parents tried to stay calm but I knew that we were exposed to a terrible danger: someone who looked exactly like me but could harm anyone in the blink of an eye.

While I was trying to process the information I heard screams coming from the kitchen, then the screams came from the living room, then from the entrance, and suddenly everyone was running and trying to escape from that hell.

I hid and tried to call the police but my phone didn’t work. I could feel the weight of the silence and pain in my chest. Hours went by until I heard footsteps and a policeman found me in my hiding spot, before I could even thank him, he arrested me violently.

Right then, I realized that he had planned everything and that the day technology stopped working was going to be my last day of freedom.
